Introduction

Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin antibacterial, has a broad spectrum & influenced by beta-lactamase. It has the capability to cross the BBB (blood brain barrier).  As Cefuroxime is categorized under Second-Generation cephalosporins so they are less active against gram-positive bacteria in comparison to first-generation cephalosporins.

Class- Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.

Antibacterial Spectrum- Broad spectrum activity against the beta-lactamase positive respiratory pathogens. It also active against Penicillin-susceptible.

Mechanism of action- 

Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis like other beta-lactam antibiotics. Cefuroxime interferes with the transpeptidation process. It also binds to Penicillin-binding protein (PBPs) which involved in the formation of the peptidoglycan bacterial cell- wall.

Pharmacokinetic-                     

The bioavailability of the product is 67%.

The absorption of the tablet is greater when taken after food i.e. 37%-52%

Serum cefuroxime is bound to protein 38-50%

Half-Life-1.2 hours

The uses of Cefuroxime Bacterial infection Respiratory tract infections, Skin infection, Urinary tract infection, Kidney infection, Ear infection & Bone infection.
