Introduction

Atenolol is a Beta-1 receptor antagonist belongs to the beta blockers for cardiovascular disease.

Mechanism of Action

Amlodipine works on the principle of blocking the calcium ion influx across the cell membrane due to which vasodilatation occurs & peripheral vascular resistance decreases to lower the blood pressure whereas Atenolol works on the principle of binding at Beta-1 adrenergic receptors for the reduction in resting heart rate, cardiac output, Systolic & diastolic blood pressure.

Absorption- Amlodipine -Slowly but completely absorbed from GIT. 

 Absorption-Atenolol-50% absorbed from GIT.

Protein binding of Amlodipine-97.5%

Protein binding of Atenolol-6-16%

A half-life of Amlodipine-30-50 hours

A half-life of Atenolol-6-7 hours 

Pharmacological Uses 

Amlodipine & Atenolol combination may be prescribed for the management for lowering blood pressure in Hypertension, Coronary artery disease, chronic stable angina, Vasospastic angina, Myocardial infarction & chest pain.
